Why am I collecting golden gears and microchips?
If you find the hidden microchip in a level, you unlock that particular level for purchase on the level select screen. If you have collected enough golden gears overall you can purchase each level to edit in the level editor.
How do I use the level editor?
After you've unlocked a level for editing click its corresponding "Edit Level" button on the level select screen to enter the editor.

What's the difference between "Mild" and "Spiky" modes?
"Spiky" mode leaves the levels as they are originally designed, while "Mild" mode changes normal spikes to regular ground and death spikes to normal spikes. You can switch between the modes at any time using the options menu.
What engine did you use to make GEAR?
Nothing! Everything was done from scratch using C++, DirectX 9.0, and fmod for sound.
How did you make the sprites and music?
The sprites were all hand-drawn frame-by-frame in Adobe Flash using a graphics tablet.

When can I buy GEAR on XBLA/PSN/WiiWare?
Probably never. Since we made the game as a student project at DigiPen, there are way too many legal issues involved with selling the game. That and we're all busy working on new projects right now. However, GEAR will always be free to download and play on PC!
I SWEAR I got all the golden gears on Level 8, but it says I'm missing a few!
This is a known glitch that came up right before the IGF/IGC deadlines. It appears to be computer-dependent. We're looking into a fix for our update in the coming months.
Fullscreen switching is messed up in Windows 7!!!
Since GEAR was developed as a student project at DigiPen, it was designed mainly for Windows XP. There are some display issues with Windows 7 that we did not have time to fix for our IGF/IGC build that we will hopefully fix for a new build in the coming months.
When I start the game all I see is a weird gray pattern. What gives?
This most likely means your graphics card does not support shader model 2.0. Perhaps it's time for an upgrade?
